BBC asks: Are games making kids smarter? [Update]

After its laughable coverage of Brain Training's "discriminatory" stance on accents earlier this year, the BBC had some work to do to get back in our favor. The feature above, part of a recent edition of flagship news program Newsnight, does just that.

Rather than automatically accusing videogames of having a negative effect on children (a default position for countless media outlets), the piece suggests that games have helped to produce brighter kids now than at any stage in history. Leading the charge for this side of the debate is Steven Johnson, author of Everything Bad Is Good for You. Johnson contends that because so much modern media (the internet, interactive television, games) is no longer consumed passively, many children grow up to be "more creative, more dynamic." Later in the piece, he also suggests that games help us to believe that "complex problem-solving is fun."

There's some solid evidence to support Johnson's claims, most notably in the IQ scores of children, which have climbed considerably over the last century. Could computer games truly be assisting in making today's kids the smartest yet? We're not certain there's a conclusive answer to that, but it delights us to see the BBC covering the debate in such a measured fashion.

[Update: Not actually shown in the UK on Friday, as original post stated.]

Sam & Max to release this August

Adventure game fans, take note: Sam & Max: Season One will be hitting Wii's this August. Those looking forward to solving crimes and revealing conspiracies with a six-foot tall canine and his violence-loving rabbit partner (read: us) are probably champing at the bit right now. Since Telltale was being so coy about Sam & Max coming to the Wii in the first place, we're surprised that the game is hitting retail so soon!

Season One and Season Two are already available in full for the PC, but this will be the duo's first console outing.

 Another Week in Europe

Filed under: Another Week in ...

Grand Theft Auto IV continues to show up the competition across Europe this week, with either the PS3 or Xbox 360 edition claiming top spot everywhere. Wii pair Wii Fit and Game Night favorite Mario Kart Wii are close behind in most places (because we're optimists, we're now going to consider third as the new first), though yours truly would love to know where anybody is finding Mario Kart in the UK -- I hit the high street to find a copy for a friend a few days back, with zero success.

Further down the charts, Boom Blox made (what could almost be described as) an impact in its second week on sale, soaring from outside the Top 40 to 19th in the UK, while Super Mario Galaxy and Guitar Hero III rejoined the top ten in Holland and Sweden respectively. No Irish charts this week, we're afraid, but here's a hunch we had: Grand Theft Auto IV probably sold a lot.

Wii Fit is U.S. Customary Measurement Training for Canadians

If you're Canadian and your BMI is coming out all wacky in Wii Fit, one of two things could be responsible:
  1. Tim Hortons
  2. You've made some kind of error due to a potentially unfamiliar measurement system.
Wii Fit, it turns out, continues to use the imperial measurements more common in the U.S. even if you've set your Wii's location to Canada. This could cause some confusion to those who didn't notice, and annoyance to those who did and have been forced to convert their familiar height and weight measurements to the crazy moon system we use. Setting your language to Spanish or French ameliorates this issue, but adds the obvious complication.

Wii Warm Up: Would you buy Wii Sports?

For most of us, Wii Sports is bundled in with the console, meaning that we don't have to purchase it separately. In Japan, though, the game isn't included and people still buy it in droves. Not only is it a best-selling game in the Japanese sales charts week after week, but nearly one of every two Wii owners in the eastern region has purchased the title.

If your Wii didn't come with Wii Sports, would you have bought it? If so, what's the most you'd be willing to pay? We already know that $50 would too much, but what's it worth to you?

 Miyamoto 'stressed' by Wii Fit

According to Time's latest interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, there may have been some genuine upending of tea tables during the making of Wii Fit, as opposed to the metaphorical kind that Shiggy prefers.

Chatting to the publication to promote the game, Miyamoto confessed that the he and his team felt "a lot of nervousness" while developing the title, and that the lofty expectations of other people caused some stress. The article also mentions that the game's development "nearly led his 15-person development team to quit in frustration," though we've no idea whether that's Time slightly embellishing a story, or what Miyamoto actually said.

All this talk of feeling stressed, Shiggy, and yet our letters offering slow, sensual shoulder rubs still go unanswered. He can't complain.

Tales of a new trailer for Dawn of the New World [update]

There's no doubt that Wii-owning RPG gamers are thirsting for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, an oasis in a barren desert filled with only ... well, Opoona (as far as traditional Japanese RPGs go, at least). That's why we're really looking forward to Namco Bandai's Tales effort for the Wii, and hope that it can fill the gaping holes in our gamer hearts. Fortunately, everything we've seen on the title so far both looks and sounds enticing. Take, for example, this latest trailer.

This three-minute video is packed with gameplay, cinematics, character introductions, action, drama, romance, and anything else you can think of. The only catch is that it's in Japanese, so unless you understand crazy talk, you probably won't know what's being said. (Note: The video stops short at the end because the last ten seconds got cut off.)

Japan will be getting the game next month, but those of us waiting for North American localization can expect it in September.

[Update: Trailer replaced with a version that doesn't cut off at the end.]

 Platinum's Shigenori Nishikawa on MadWorld's over-the-top violence

While at Capcom, Shigenori Nishikawa worked as a designer on Resident Evil 4, the Resident Evil remake, and Dino Crisis 2 and 3. Now, as his first project with Platinum Games, he's directing his own original game, MadWorld. Famitsu spoke to Nishikawa about his bizarre new game.

Nishikawa revealed MadWorld's setting as a game show called "Death Watch." Protagonist Jack has to kill the other participants in entertaining ways for the audience's sake, and he grows in rank as he does this. This translates into a scoring system based on the "extreme" nature of the kills. The black-and-white look is designed to emphasize the blood. Nishikawa originally planned to render the blood in a high-gloss silver, but opted for red instead. Because of this violence, Nishikawa and producer Atsushi Inaba aren't yet sure the game will release in Japan.

Telltale talks about Strong Bad, Sam & Max

The folks at Telltale Games have been talking up Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, as well as the upcoming Wii port of Sam & Max, to TheBBPS. Aside from what was said to Joystiq last week, the team at Telltale Games revealed that the Strong Bad game will be running on the same engine that powers Sam & Max. Also revealed about Strong Bad is the inclusion of a "bizarre 'edutainment' title" in one of the upcoming episodes.

In regards to Sam & Max, the decision to go with a retail product made more sense, but they aren't ruling out the possibility of hitting up WiiWare.
