The internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage.
It's another special celebration this week at Wii Fanboy, and we thought that we would do something special in this week's VC Advantage, involving one of the most iconic Virtual Console games -- in fact, one of the most iconic video games of all time. Even though Super Mario Bros. didn't come out in the U.S. until Christmas, it's the canonical Nintendo game and thus seems like a perfect candidate for the Wii anniversary week VCA.
Two (more) caveats before we delve into our subject matter: first, we'd like to bring up the point that not all secrets are cheats, and not all are intentional. Some of the most interesting discoveries in video games were put in there totally by accident, or are the result of someone's imagination. Second, the images and subject matter of today's VCA are as not safe for work as unaltered Super Mario Bros. footage can be.
The Kintamario
In 1-2, or any other level in which you can get on top of the line of blocks acting as an upper screen boundary, you can perform a puerile visual gag that makes Mario resemble a tanuki, but not in the same way that Super Mario Bros. 3's Tanooki Suit did. Simply position the coin in the coin display between Mario's legs. The coin's "flashing" color is the same as Mario's skin tone, so Mario will appear to have a rounded protuberance between his legs. That's right, Kintamario is a portmanteau consisting of the words kintama 'balls, testicles' and Mario. Oh, how clever!
The Unkomario
This equally childish gag uses the same setup: positioning Mario in front of the coin icon. If you then crouch, it sort of looks like Mario is defecating, right there on the bricks! "Take that, bricks," we imagine Mario saying, "maybe next time, you'll just give me the star instead of making me beat it out of your friend over there." Unko means 'feces', of course!
Something as ridiculously silly can only be funny to children, right? Maybe not. Check out 9-Volt and 18-Volt's intro video from Wario Ware: Smooth Moves and see if you see anything familiar. Apparently someone at Intelligent Systems thinks it's funny too!
We like stuff like this not only because we're giggling man-children, but because we like the idea of finding new ways to enjoy our games. This is user-created content, right here. With this week being dedicated to the first birthday of our most favorite thing on this planet, the Wii, we looked at every possible aspect of the console we wanted to discuss. All of our launch day stories, its first year when compared to the GameCube and, last but not least, Nintendo's first foray into the downloadable content arena. And, as many of you faithful readers know, we love checking out what the service has for download every Monday.
As responsible bloggers, we do our best to play the releases every week and let you know what we think. In doing this, we've run up quite the tab with Nintendo, as we've only missed a few weeks of covering the games. Considering the average weekly release of games will set you back about $21, we calculated that the amount of money we've spent on Virtual Console games is more than we could've ever imagined.
Sadly, we can't measure the full year, as we've only been downloading every game to discuss since near the end of February. So, that's about 4 months of not downloading games, which brings us to about 40 weeks of downloads. With the average cost for us to do so each week is $21 and change (as we've said above), we've spent about $840 total on Virtual Console games.
We look forward to this upcoming year, to get a full year's catalog of releases under our belt. And, what about you folks? On average, how much do you think you spend a week? How much do you think you've spent since the service's debut?Permalink | Email this | Comments ";s:8:"category";s:44:"anniversaryanniversary-weekblogsalesyear-one";s:2:"dc";a:2:{s:7:"creator";s:12:"David Hinkle";s:4:"date";s:25:"2007-11-20T18:00:00+00:00";}s:7:"summary";s:2919:"

It's another week of high quantity on Japan's Virtual Console -- but that doesn't necessarily mean that, when employing their shovel, Nintendo didn't pick up some good stuff. In fact, overall, this is a very solid Virtual Console week, featuring five games new to the VC in any region. We're pretty likely to at least get Ghosts 'n' Goblins soon in the U.S., and Eternal Champions's Japanese release makes an upcoming release pretty likely. We're hoping for Nuts & Milk ourselves, just because the name makes us laugh every time we see it. Not because of any prurient reason -- we just think it looks like a shopping list.

Not only have we (potentially) had a year with the Wii, we've also had a year with the Virtual Console. We've seen some great classics released this year in all regions, from the original Legend of Zelda to Super Mario Bros. 3, and some more obscure titles, like Devil's Crush. Of course, there are a few that we've love to see that are thus far no-shows, but even so, we feel pretty satisfied overall with the Virtual Console in its debut year. How about you? How many games have you downloaded? Originally, European Wii owners were set to find a whopping two titles available this week on the Virtual Console. While that may seem a little thin in comparison to the beefier offerings that have been up in recent weeks, the situation is made even worse by the fact that one of them got yanked at the last minute due to technical difficulties. So, folks, today you get Double Dribble.
Yes, that's all. Double Dribble. Hope you feel like playing some basketball! If not ... well, here's to next Friday.

It's not SNK putting Neo Geo classics on the Virtual Console. They're off releasing compilations and embarrassing DS games. The company responsible for your sudden access to Blue's Journey is D4 Enterprise, who has been obtaining licenses for Neo Geo games from SNK and putting the games on the Virtual Console.
Gamasutra's Brandon Sheffield spoke to D4's Shinobu Shimizu about the company and their Neo Geo plans. Basically, D4 plans to release SNK Playmore properties (and, as shown by World Heroes, ADK games as well) in a very faithfully-emulated form, with the possibility of a few concessions made to new gamers. Selectable difficulty in Magician Lord is cited as such a change.
D4 already has experience with enabling retrogaming on rare systems -- they got their start with the 1Chip MSX device, a new, cheaper version of the MSX computer (pictured). It is no surprise, then, that D4 is behind the plans to put MSX games on the VC.

Puyo Puyo, Compile's series of falling-blob puzzle games, currently has two iterations on the American Virtual Console. Neither of these games contain the words "Puyo" or "Puyo" in their titles. But Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine are Puyo through and through(yo). Which automatically means that they're cute and enjoyable Tetris/Columns-esque puzBlogsmith : JC.Fletcher@weblogsinc.comzle games. And (insert segue here) here are some codes for them.
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (GEN) Skip to the final boss: Yes, it's weird that a puzzle game like this has level passwords. It's even weirder for it to have bosses. Should you want to experience the weirdness for yourself, you can take advantage of the fact that level passwords are delightfully easy to share on the Internet -- much more so than, say, save files. To access the final boss, enter the following password: for easy mode, enter Yellow, Has, Blue, Blue. For normal, enter Purple, Yellow, Has, Clear. Hard: Has, Clear, Purple, Has. Hardest: Red, Red, Clear, Yellow.
Kirby's Avalanche (SNES) Custom options menu: Hold down all four face buttons on controller 2 during gameplay, then reset the game. Go into the options menu and more options will appear, including level select and a sound test. We cannot guarantee the utility of this code; in fact, it's a bit of a research interest for us. Does the soft reset of the Virtual Console work like a real reset? If this code works, it does!

The biggest surprise for us this week is right there in the title. Balloon Fight is one of the canonical first-generation NES games. It's already out in the U.S. and Europe, and it was even remade for the DS in Japan in a Club Nintendo-exclusive Tingle version. So why has it taken so long to show up on the Virtual Console in Japan? In the time that Japanese Wii owners have been waiting for Balloon Fight, they've gotten two versions of Wonder Boy in Monster World. Similarly, today brings the second version of Gradius II.
Speaking of repeat performances, we'd like to point out how awesomely Treasure is represented on the VC. Light Crusader is the fourth Treasure game to appear on the VC so far, and we appreciate every one. Even Light Crusader.

If you had a N64 and friends, then you probably played a couple of different games on the regular. Some game starring a "Bond. Mr. James Bond" or something, called Goldeneye 007, seemed to be the crowd favorite. Another game some would say was quite popular was Mario Kart 64, a game that involved kart racing and some guy with a mustache. Last, but not least (for us, anyway), was a series of wrestling games based on both the WCW and WWF (a magical time when one guy didn't totally destroy what used to be a kind of fun program to watch).
Now, the last amazing wrestling game that the N64 would ever see (and most would agree, gaming as a whole) might be making its way onto the Virtual Console. But, it won't be the same game you remember, because word on the street is that it's to be updated with the current roster of WWE superstars. While we could care less about the new crop of wrestlers, we could easily create all of our old favorites using the awesome character creation mode.
Who else is with us in wanting this game?

We've shared some of our not-so-secret desires for the Virtual Console with you, and every week, we revisit the topic, thanks to our own JC Fletcher -- but how do you feel about how the VC is shaping up? It seems likely that there's at least one game you'd like to see that isn't up there yet (hi2u, StarTropics, insert frowny-face, etc.), but overall, there is a pretty good selection so far, with more to come. What we want to know is: how do you feel about the line-up so far? What about pricing? The selection of systems? Are you enjoying the VC more or less than you were months ago?Permalink | Email this | Comments ";s:8:"category";s:18:"most-wantedpricing";s:2:"dc";a:2:{s:7:"creator";s:16:"Alisha Karabinus";s:4:"date";s:25:"2007-11-12T09:00:00+00:00";}s:7:"summary";s:1772:"

This week, European gamers have another crack at the Neo Geo, and they can get their golf on if they are so inclined ... but somehow, we just have a feeling that the most popular title will also be the cheapest. Gee, could it be that a few people might be a little excited about Super Mario Bros. 3?

Reggie's recent address in New York failed to tell us much that we didn't already know, though it did throw up the slide you see above, indicating that Nintendo is promising us 200 Virtual Console games in the US by the end of this year. We can probably all agree that the world would be a better place if Pilotwings 64 and River City Ransom were included in that number.
But we digress. See, the folks over at Game|Life did the math, and discovered that would mean Nintendo has only eight Mondays left in 2007 to deliver 34 games. Average that out, and you get 4.25 games a week. Currently, of course, we only get three titles every Monday. So, is this a genuine miscalculation on Ninty's part, naughty marketing hyperbole, or will we really be seeing more retro goodness than normal pumped down our tubes in the coming weeks?
Either way, Nintendo, we are now absolutely holding you to this. 200 by December 31st or you're ripped from our BFF collage. And we do not make such threats lightly.

In honor of the highest-profile Virtual Console release in quite a while, we thought we'd do a special video presentation today. Super Mario Bros. 3 has the "honor" of having one of its best secrets screamed about by Fred Savage and Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis in the climactic sequence of a major motion picture. One that, we admit, has temporarily relieved us of our feelings of nostalgia, and made us very glad that we no longer reside in the 1980's.
We can't think of too many movies in which the deus ex machina is a hidden item in an NES game. Therefore, The Wizard, as painful as it can be to watch, is pretty much the Official Movie of the VC Advantage by default. Grab your popcorn and your Power Glove and settle in for (seven minutes of) The Wizard!Permalink | Email this | Comments ";s:8:"category";s:42:"nessuper-mario-bros-3the-wizardvcadvantage";s:2:"dc";a:2:{s:7:"creator";s:11:"JC Fletcher";s:4:"date";s:25:"2007-11-07T20:00:00+00:00";}s:7:"summary";s:2514:"

It seems that Sega managed to get a satisfactory amount of attention for releasing Alien Soldier, despite putting it out on the same day as Super Mario Bros. 3. They announced that they're going to continue releasing import games on the American Virtual Console (at the same premium price, of course). Maybe now we'll see stuff that is completely new to the U.S.; Alien Soldier and Golden Axe III were both Sega Channel games.
This is wonderful news! Slowly, companies are getting the idea that the Virtual Console is good for more than just "greatest hits" -- that it allows players to discover games they hadn't, or couldn't have, played before. Too bad the import Mega Drive game we really want, Treasure's Yuu Yuu Hakusho Makyou Toitsusen, has a license that will make worldwide release difficult, if not impossible.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ";s:8:"category";s:31:"alien-soldiergenesisimportssega";s:2:"dc";a:2:{s:7:"creator";s:11:"JC Fletcher";s:4:"date";s:25:"2007-11-07T16:00:00+00:00";}s:7:"summary";s:2332:"

For the second week in a row, American gamers have gotten the red carpet in comparison to Japanese Wii owners. The Virtual Console uploads for this week are tame compared to the wish-fulfilling awesomeness of Super Mario Bros. 3 and the VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK! of Alien Soldier.
The Japanese releases are by no means bad, and, in fact, there are some games that will genuinely interest people, like the first King of Fighters and the first console Goemon game, which would lead to the beloved Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Then there's ... the "Sega Club" educational Ecco sequel, and the Wonderboy game with yet another character swap. Poor Wonderboy. Why couldn't he ever star in two console versions of the same game? Dynastic Hero is actually another version of Wonderboy in Monster World, which ... is already on the VC. Interesting choice for one of the first CD-based PC Engine games on the VC. And by "interesting" we mean "a terrible waste."

Heralding the release of Super Mario Galaxy this November 12th, Nintendo plans to deliver Super Mario Bros. 3, a title which many feel to be the NES's finest product, with this week's Virtual Console update. We've already pulled 500 Wii points out of our wallet, just waiting to hand the cash over to anyone who'll give us the game in return. We'll sleep tonight with the bills gripped tightly in our fists, smiling as we dream about spending the entirety of tomorrow ensconced in a giant green boot.
Treasure's classic run-and-gun boss-travaganza for the Sega Genesis, Alien Soldier, will also be available for download tomorrow, having previously appeared in North America only through the ill-fated Sega Channel. Hardcore gamers won't regret spending 900 Wii points on this one. And if they do, that speaks more to their character than Alien Soldier's qualities.
On the TurboGrafx-16 side, we'll have the option of buying Power Golf for 600 Wii points. Unfortunately for Power Golf, we've already resigned ourselves to only purchasing games which feature either a Tanooki Suit or a Seven Force robot this week. Sucks to be Power Golf.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ";s:8:"category";s:79:"alien-soldiercharles-martinetplatformerpower-golfsmb3super-mario-bros-3treasure";s:2:"dc";a:2:{s:7:"creator";s:11:"Eric Caoili";s:4:"date";s:25:"2007-11-04T23:00:00+00:00";}s:7:"summary";s:2524:"

It's another Friday, and lately, that means Neo Geo games! Plus, y'know, some other stuff, which is usually pretty pricey, as VC titles goes. But this week, European gamers get a little break with a release out there for only 600 points. On top of that, there's four games from which Wii owners may choose. Sometimes, it's good to be a Nintendo fan.
Alien Soldier -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii points
Art of Fighting -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii points
Samurai Ghost -- Turbografx -- 600 Wii points

These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage.
Today is the perfect day to look at some of the spookier games on the Virtual Console, and then help you face your fears and take them on. It would certainly have been a good day to talk about Ghosts 'n Goblins games, as well, but ... we already did that. Uh, as part of our Halloween special, here's a link to that old VC Advantage! It's ... uh, back from the dead!
Luckily, awkward backlinks aren't the only thing we can present for our Halloween edition of The VC Advantage. There are still some gruesome games we have yet to cover!
And that means that it's now totally scary time! Turn out all the lights and stuff! We're making weird "oooooo" spooky noises, but you can't hear it, because we'll have written this hours ago by the time you're reading it, and also we're not in the same room as you!
Splatterhouse (TG16) Hard mode: What's scarier than a game in which the main character dies, over and over and over again, forced to relive the same horrific period of a few seconds before he's ripped apart yet again by disgusting, nightmarish monsters? Probably a lot of stuff. Dentistry comes to mind. Loneliness. But what's scarier in the context of video game alterations caused by input of preprogrammed button sequences? Probably still some stuff. To access hard mode, hold Select at the title screen until the word HARD appears.
Castlevania (NES) Hard mode: Yes, it's another hard mode, but this one seems pretty notable. We had no idea that Castlevania even had one of these, and we doubt anyone else ever would have were it not for cheat devices and ROM hacking-- because you access Castlevania's hard mode by completing the game, and that is impossible. Of all the games to put a hard mode in. Also we heard that if you finish the hard mode, Koji Igarashi will ride a Medusa head to your house and give you a million dollars. And nobody will ever know if that's true. Kid Chameleon (GEN) Level skip: Kid Chameleon isn't really that scary, but it is about dressing up in costumes. And that is the true meaning of Halloween (also, candy, which is delicious, when eaten.) To skip straight to the last boss, find some blogs above the flag in the Blue Lake Woods level and jump to the last one. Then press down, right, jump, and special.

Well, we needed some time to settle down after last week's megaton. Being heartbroken about awesome games being released in other regions is hard work, you know! We're sure you all felt a bit of the agony as River City Ransom saw a release in not-here.
The highest-profile release for Japan this week is an N64 game we already have and don't care much about anyway; backing that up is a humorous NES RTS from Square Enix, which we'll probably never see, and a very early Genesis shooter/platformer that was the first in the series that produced Cybernator. Some good stuff, to be sure, but we're glad to have the time off from freaking out.

... and also Milk. November's Virtual Console outlook for Japan looks pretty excellent, with a lot of delightfully niche stuff. That includes King's Knight, the medieval-themed vertical shooter (!) from Square(!) that nobody likes but us ( ....) It will also bring Sega's Eternal Champions, the goofy Mortal Kombat-influenced fighting game that we poured hundreds of hours into. But it also includes stuff that non-us people will enjoy, like Panel de Pon, which, released in the U.S. as Tetris Attack, is the most popular version of the Puzzle League puzzle games. Light Crusader is notable for being an RPG from Treasure, and not much else.
Of course, the big news for a lot of us is that SNK has turned the King of Fighters faucet on, ensuring a constant stream of fighting games with overdone storylines and ridiculous outfits for at least a year. Here's the full lineup for November, assuming some of them don't get bumped or pushed back into December (they will):
